Solid Goal

Tonight I'm giving a shout out to Personal Accountability. In honor of all who stand up to say, "I have a goal and I intend to achieve it", I am highlighting two online goal-tracker thingamabobs that can help you kick your goal's butt.

The first is JoesGoals.com, named so presumably, because a guy named Joe wrote the program, not because you're voyeuristically tracking some other guy's goals. Extremely basic and to-the-point, you can plug in two kinds of goals: a) things you want to do, or b) things you're trying not to do. Graphics include checkmarks, Xs, and smiley/sad faces. To make it any more basic, you'd have to go get a pencil and a piece of paper. It's simple. Really, really simple. But that doesn't mean it's bad. I actually like the simplicity of it. The last thing I want to have to do is start scheduling long blocks of my already-limited spare time to compile exhaustive reports about how I'm accomplishing my goals (or not). If that, however, is your bag...

...then you should check out LifeTick.com, which offers a mondo complex way of tracking your goals. It will have you examine your core values, adhere to S.M.A.R.T. goal methodology, create multi-tiered task lists, produce snazzy visualizations (ie. pie charts, bar graphs), navigate a dashboard full of widgets, write affirmation lists, and keep an online journal. It's built with an impressive (dare I say, exhaustive) level of detail. I can understand the appeal...but it's not for me.

I raise a toast to all the goal nerds out there, who, like me, enjoy having something to look forward to and think it's fun trying to be a better person. Speaking of which, I have about a week left to come up with an idea for February's 30-Day, I mean 29-Day, Challenge. If you have any ideas for something I should either try to do, try to create, or try to resist, let me know in the comments. Happy goaling to you!
